Dear participants,

We are pleased to invite you to the 10th Joseph Sandler Research Conference which takes place in Frankfurt/Main for the second time. Joseph Sandler initiated this conference – together with leading psychoanalytic clinicians and researchers. His aim was to build bridges between psychoanalysts who are working mainly in their private offices and those who are engaged in different forms of extra clinical psychoanalytic research in institutions. Joseph Sandler was President of the International Psychoanalytical Association, Freud Memorial Professor at University College London (UCL) and at Hebrew University Jerusalem. He was a senior scientist at the Sigmund-Freud-Institut in Frankfurt/Main between 1986 and 1990.

The last conferences were held at the University College and the Anna Freud Centre in London. They had been organized by the Research Subcommittee for Empirical Research (Chair: Peter Fonagy) and the Research Subcommittee for Conceptual Research (Chair: Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber). This year’s conference programme was also conceptualized by both Research Subcommittees. It is devoted to an important and extremely important societal topic: Religion and Fanatism. This destructive combination came back to individual and collective consciousness with unexpected intensity after September 11th. In psychoanalysis, as in many other disciplines, fanatism and religion has been a neglected field of research until the very last years. In this conference we would like to intensify the interdisciplinary dialogue on this most relevant issues. We are pleased that prominent international speakers have accepted our invitation. We are sure to offer a most interesting exchange for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists with their interdisciplinary scientific partners. As well as with other professionals and a broader public.

Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, Peter Fonagy
